Composition Competitions – H02 to H05

This year’s composition competitions are designed to stimulate new composers of all ages offering opportunities to exhibit new works in the presence of a wide audience and win fabulous prizes. Each competition will provide a platform where musicians can learn about styles and techniques of composition and discover new directions through listening to other competitors.
Book prizes from The Music Master Publications Ltd will be awarded to the winners of each of the competitions, H02 to H05 and an overall winner will be chosen to receive the title of ‘North London Festival Best Composer’ and will be presented with a certificate and trophy during the end of festival concert on Tuesday 19th May 2020. To be eligible for these composition competitions, pieces must be composed using the fifteen Starting Points for Composition; these are available by clicking on the link in the bottom box on the right-hand side of this page. They are also included with the Composition syllabus.
Public performance, adjudication and prize giving will take place on Thursday 7th May. All participants will be notified in writing with specific information relating to their entry shortly after the closing date. If a competitor has been a pupil of the Adjudicator in the six-months prior to the Festival, they should contact the Composition Section Head before entering.

Fanfare Composition Prize

Prize: £1000 cash
The winning fanfare will be performed at the North London Festival Centenary Concert, in November 2020 *
The North London Festival celebrates its Centenary in 2020. We are holding a one-off composition competition to mark our first 100 years, inviting composers to create a fanfare. This piece should commemorate the Festival’s strong musical heritage and look forward to its next century. We are looking for a piece that is celebratory, creative and engaging, to reflect the grandeur, pomp and circumstance associated with the occasion.
- Open to composers of all ages
- For any orchestral ensemble, maximum 8 players, one to each part
- Performance time up to 15 minutes
- Scores may be recorded live or digitally
Adjudication and prize-giving will take place at the Hampstead Garden Suburb Free Church, Central Square, NW11 7AG on Thursday 7th May 2020. All participants will be notified in writing with specific information relating to their entry shortly after the closing date. If a competitor has been a pupil of the Adjudicator in the six-months prior to the Festival, they should contact the Composition Section Head before entering.
The winner will be awarded a £1000 cash prize and the prize-winning piece will be performed (*at the discretion of the Trustees) to open the Centenary Concert in November 2020.

Please send your completed score with a recording (live or digital) to the Composition Section Head, Graham Bennett (address below)
Compositions can be performed live or a digital or CD recording provided on the day of adjudication. All compositions must be presented with a commentary to introduce the piece prior to its performance.
The time limits for the competitions refer to the maximum length of performance including the commentary presentation.
The closing date for composition entries is Friday 17th April 2020.
